Mule & Whitetail deer are becoming the most sought after big game animals in the country. It’s been hard to find quality mature bucks with the over harvest and poor management in the west. Bear Paw Hunts has changed that by controlling areas and allowing the bucks to become mature before they are harvested. Bear Paw Hunts continues to control doe to buck ratios and eliminate inferior bucks. A large mature buck population has given the animal an opportunity to breed their genetics into the herds ensuring quality animals.

Hunting big mule deer bucks in the rut is a great hunt to consider. Being able to hunt these deer during the rut with a rifle gives our clients and amazing edge to harvest a nice mature Mule deer buck. Our Mule deer are big bodied, heavy antlered and are deep forked. Our Whitetails are known for big bodies, heavy antlers and tall tines. Our clients are amazed at the amount of Whitetails we have in our hunting area. These deer have some of the same genetics as you see just north of us in Canada.

Double Deuce Outfitters
1438 Reservation Creek Rd, Forsyth, Montana 59327
Phone: (406) 342-5475

Most of our whitetail hunting is done along the Yellowstone River. The deer leave their bedding areas in the evening to feed on the cropland and return at dawn. We hunt them from ladder stands and ground blinds set up on trails to and from these feeding areas. Deer drives and still hunting can also be very effective at times. You can expect to see anywhere from ten to fifty deer a day and have opportunity at bucks ranging somewhere between 110 and 170+ B&C. Mule deer hunting is our specialty. If the thought of hunting thousands of acres without bumping into another hunter appeals to you, this might just be your kind of hunt. With the Ponderosa Pine, Ash, and Cottonwood trees, this is one of the nicest spots in Eastern Montana. The mule deer spend most of their time in timber patches and the brushy draws that are scattered abundantly throughout the area. Walking ridges, sitting, and still hunting can be effective, but the best way is to use a vehicle to cover as much country as possible in the mornings and evenings. Using this strategy, youre very likely to find mule deer feeding on the edges. The spot and stalk method with a lot of glassing is usually the key here. If you enjoy seeing a lot of country but walking from daylight until dark isnt ideal to you, you will like this hunt. Along with a multitude of other wildlife you can also expect to see 50 to 100 deer every day. Our mule deer hunts have a very high success rate on quality bucks with 8 to 14 points and ranging from twenty to thirty inches wide

During the general rifle season, we find the mule deer browsing in the open side hills and brush fields of the higher elevations. These are most often the same areas we hunt for elk. It is common to be glassing these areas and see both mule deer and elk in the same canyon. Many hunters who purchase the deer / elk combination license prefer to concentrate their efforts on elk, but a mature muley buck is always a target of opportunity. The mule deer rut here usually takes place earlier than the whitetail rut. If you are looking to score on a rutted up old muley, you might consider booking your hunt for late October or early November.

The refuge encompasses over 1.2 million acres and 1500 miles of shoreline, and we have one of a limited number of permits to outfit on the refuge. Typically we use boats to gain access to our favorite hunting areas. The “Breaks” have been known as one of the best mule deer hunting areas in the U.S. for years. Our private ranches also contain some very good bucks! We are also able to offer 1-on-1 hunts, upon request; please call pricing and availability.

Trophy mule deer hunting in the state of Montana is great! The areas we hunt have a mixture of open country, pine forests, rim rock ridges, coulees, and cropland. All which help create absolutely phenomenal mule deer habitat. The success rate on whitetail will be totally dependent upon the rut due to the open terrain that they inhabit. Whitetail trophies of 140-150 B&C gross bucks have been harvested. The non-resident deer tag is good for either mule deer or whitetail but only one antlered buck may be taken in any year. The non-resident deer license is obtained through the Montana General License Drawing, and applications need to be in no later then March 15th. If a good trophy mule deer is on your wish list, give us a call for your next western hunt!
